The Los Angeles Lakers pick Stanley Johnson for the rest of the season

EL SEGUNDO, California (AP) – The Los Angeles Lakers have signed striker Stanley Johnson for the remainder of the season following the Orange County native’s strong performance over the past month.

The deal, announced Thursday, also includes a team option for next season on Johnson, a seven-year-old NBA veteran.

The Lakers signed Johnson to a 10-day contract on Dec. 24 through the NBA’s exemption from adversity. He immediately became a steady contributor to Los Angeles’ inconsistent front line while playing solid wing defense, and he signed two more 10-day contracts before the Lakers locked him in for the rest of the year.

Johnson has started six of his 14 games with the Lakers. He averages 6.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists, while shooting career highs of 51.6% from the field and 34.4% on 3-pointers.

Johnson began his NBA career in 2015 with the Detroit Pistons, who selected him with the eighth overall pick. He played parts of the last two seasons with Toronto.
