Luke Bolton’s senior Manchester City career has so far been marked by a series of loan spells. The 22-year-old has endured loan stays with the likes of Wycombe Wanderers, Dundee United and Luton Town – with varying degrees of success.
The Stockport-born youngster is not yet playing for his boys’ club, and at the moment the possibility of a run-out on the first team seems highly unlikely.
According to a report by Football InsiderBarnsley is understood to have made one ‘request’ to take Luke Bolton on a permanent basis to the Championship.
While it never gives much impression to see a local boy on the verge of leaving the club, it should also be pointed out that the Englishman has only played six games for Manchester City’s U-23 team this season.
Phil Foden’s progress to superstar despite being a year younger than Bolton, as well as other academy stars Cole Palmer and James McAtee were in and around the first team squad, could help argue that Bolton have fallen out of the way at Etihad Stadium.
A Manchester City Academy-trained winger is also capable of acting as a full-back, pointing to his brilliant versatility – a trait much admired by first-team manager Pep Guardiola.
However, it is also key to have an incredible technical and tactical understanding of the game – aspects that the English U-20 national team player may well develop over time.
As things stand, a switch to the championship could give Luke Bolton a new life to revive his career.
