City of Vancouver to reduce collection of green bins to every other week as it handles staff shortages

The city of Vancouver says green trash cans will be collected every two weeks temporarily as it handles staff shortages due to COVID-19.

The city’s website says the collection will take place on Garbage Day every other week in February. It predicts that green trash will return for weekly pickup at the end of the month.

The city apologized for the inconvenience and said it values the patience of the public as the crews do their best to maintain services in these challenging times.

Green bins are intended for organic waste, including garden scraps, food scraps, food-dirty paper products, and used wooden chopsticks and skewers. Plastic containers and plastic cutlery, even those labeled “biodegradable” or “compostable” are not allowed in green bins.

The city says green bins should be outside by 6 p.m. 7 in the morning on the day of pickup.
