River Plate plans to offer Edinson Cavani a two-year contract to tempt him to join a free transfer from 6 p.m. Manchester United at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old’s deal at Old Trafford ends at the end of this promotion and he is not expected to extend his stay in the Premier League.

A return to South America is now a strong opportunity for the Uruguayan veteran and something that has been inadvertently created by Manchester City.

The Premier League champions have agreed a deal to sign 21-year-old hot client Julian Alvarez from River Plate, where the striker is moving to Etihad this summer.

River will have to replace the youngster, and Sun reports they are willing to pay the bulk of Cavani’s wage demands, which range to £ 250,000 a week.

Cavani had been linked with a return to South America this summer but chose to stay at Old Trafford for another season, though this campaign has been disrupted by illness and injury.

The former PSG superstar has only made five Premier League starts this season, scoring two league goals, and has had a harder time getting into the starting 11 since United’s re-acquisition of Cristiano Ronaldo.

He has also been linked with a switch to Boca Juniors and a switch to Barcelona, but River Plate now appears to be at the forefront of the queue.

The deal to take Alvarez to City has been signed, with the Argentine national team player on loan back to River Plate until July, joining his new team this summer.
