There is a reason why these little blue gems have become popular as a “superfruit.” Blueberries are credited for their powerful antioxidant content, and wild blueberries take things up. Despite being small, they have twice as many antioxidants and 33% more healthy anthocyanins (a type of flavonoid) than regular blueberries
“All this antioxidant power is a big thing when it comes to keeping the skin youthful, as antioxidants absorb free radicals that damage and age the skin,” says Nutrition Twins.
These antioxidants are known to help reduce inflammation, which in turn prevents some of the cellular damage that naturally comes with age.
Protein is essential for collagen production, which helps keep the skin supple, elastic and youthful. Nutrition Twins’ go-to ingredient for this smoothie is pea protein powder, but this can also be replaced with chickpeas. Legumes like pea protein and chickpeas are also good sources of plant-based protein and fiber, so they help keep you full, which can ultimately help with weight loss.
While these protein sources help look younger on the outside, like blueberries, their anti-inflammatory properties also fight aging on the inside, says The Nutrition Twins.
Spices are celebrated for their abundance of health benefits and this chai spice blend is filled with them. Cinnamon, ginger and cardamom not only enhance the taste of smoothies, but they also contain powerful antioxidants that fight inflammation and protect cells from diseases such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease and cancer.
While the spice trio is actively working to defend and repair the body’s cells, cinnamon also plays a particularly notable role in lowering blood sugar.
“Continuous high levels of sugar in the blood are likely to react with proteins in the body such as collagen and can cause loss of elasticity, premature wrinkling and can create brown spots or ‘age spots’,” says The Nutrition Twins.

Ready to whip this delicious and healthy anti-aging concoction together? Here’s what you need:
- 2/3 cup frozen wild blueberries
- 1/2 small banana
- 1 scoop (20 grams) plain pea protein powder (or a taste like vanilla)
- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 pinch crushed cardamom
- 3 ice cubes
Optional additions to your smoothie may include water (to dilute the smoothie to your desired thickness), 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric (for an extra antioxidant / anti-inflammatory boost), 1 to 2 drops of liquid stevia (for extra sweetness, if your banana is not very ripe or you want a little extra sweetness when using protein powder without taste)
To replace canned chickpeas, omit protein powder and replace 1/2 cup unsalted canned chickpeas, drained and rinsed.
